Accent Grasses for Containers and Landscape Beds

Ornamental grasses are a must to complete the look of your containers and landscape beds. The bright spray of green, red, or bronze gives the eye a calming place to rest and adds height to lower growing blooms spreading underneath.

For containers, choose annual grasses that stay compact. One specimen in the center is usually sufficient for smaller containers. For landscape beds, choose from several varieties available from Beier's perennial selection. These types come up from year to year and are slow spreading, making them great decorations for perennial gardens.

Fountain Grasses

Fountain-type grasses spray many blades from one compact base. The roots stay in one spot and the blades literally fountain in a one to two foot radius, making these grasses ideal to fill blank spots in the garden. Choose low-growing varieties for containers or front borders in annual beds; taller varieties look fabulous along fence lines or paths.

As the summer wears on, fountain grasses “bloom” fine seed heads that seem lighter than air. Even if your flowering plants are resting, these grasses add interest and a breezy feeling. You can extend the life of your containers by several weeks simply by planting grass with the petunias or daisies.

Spikes

Spike-type grasses have fewer blades, are typically more upright, and bring a sharp definition to containers and landscape beds. Spikes are dramatic main characters rather than members of the supporting cast.

For small containers, a single spike in the center may be just right. Larger containers can support a group of three spikes interplanted with low-growing flowers. Landscape beds look best with groups of three or five spikes planted close together in bunches.

Colored Grasses

Zebra grass offers two toned blades, and deep red or bronze/copper colored grasses give containers and landscape beds an extra dimension of color. Bunny tails bloom soft yellow puffs that are a delight in the garden.

Combine colored grasses with flowers carefully so the shades don't clash. Most flowers bloom pure red and bright yellow, so opt for pink and gold blooms when you're introducing grasses to the mix. A stunning bronze or copper grass looks awesome with blue and violet flowers; orange shades are complimented by sprays of green grass; white flower are brought to life by dark green accents.

Ornamental Grasses: A Treat for the Senses

No matter which type of grass you choose for your containers or landscape beds, you'll enjoy them swaying and rustling in the breeze. Their fine textures and soft colors are just the decoration you need for a gorgeous garden.
